UNDERSTANDING YOUR CARE

A personal
approach to care.

Otoplasty, also called ear pinning, is surgery to change the shape, position, or size of the outer ears. People may consider it when one or both ears project noticeably from the head, look disproportionate, differ in shape, or have changed after an injury or birth difference. The concern is usually appearance, balance, or self-consciousness rather than hearing; otoplasty does not change where the ears are located on the head or how well they hear.

An initial consultation typically includes a medical history, questions about ear infections or prior surgery, and an examination of ear placement, size, shape, and symmetry. You can discuss what you hope to change and review whether observation, age-appropriate nonsurgical care, or surgery makes sense. If surgery is considered, the plan is individualized: techniques may reshape or reposition cartilage through incisions behind or within the ear’s folds. Your clinician should also explain anesthesia options, expected changes, and risks such as bleeding, infection, scarring, altered sensation, or asymmetry.
